WHY SAVE SNOW LEOPARDS

Solitary, almost silent and majestically beautiful, the snow leopard is one of the most enigmatic big cats. Living in the high altitudes of Himalaya, it is also one of the most elusive and endangered. Five hundred million people in India rely on rivers that originate in snow leopard habitat. In order to ensure water security, it is of utmost priority that we conserve the Himalayan ecosystem.

You can help support the cause of protecting Snow Leopards, a vulnerable species that regulates the entire Himalayan ecosystem as an apex predator. Simply put, healthy population of Snow Leopards indicate the health of our Himalayas and its rivers.

WHAT IS WWF INDIA DOING TO PROTECT THE SNOW LEOPARDS

CONDUCTING SURVEYS AND RESEARCH

We do not even have reliable estimate of snow leopard population in the country. It is a challenging task as the high-altitude habitats that snow leopards call home are rugged and remote with winter temperatures dropping down to -30 degress. We are now using best of science to find out how many snow leopards are there and where all they are found.
Support us to conduct ground-breaking research and surveys in these extreme terrains, it will help conservationists have a better chance than ever before to protect them.

BALANCING THE HUMAN-WILDLIFE INTERFACE IN THE MOUNTAINS

Human-wildlife conflict is an urgent and pressing matter. In the high mountain ranges, conflict with snow leopards and wolves are common as they attack livestock for food. For mountain communities, this is a growing challenge that affects agriculture and pastoralism, further impacting livelihood options. WWF India has designed smart predator-proof corrals to protect these livestock/livelihood of communities, and reduce retaliatory killings of wild animals. These specially developed predator-proof corrals keep livestock safe from predators and let people have a good sleep without worrying about their livestock.

LEADING AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

Leading awareness programmes: Organizing snow leopard conservation awareness programmes for local communities to enable a harmonious co-existence between the people and the big cat.

MONITORING THE EXISTING SNOW LEOPARD POPULATION

Monitoring the existing snow leopard population: Using camera traps and DNA analysis to monitor movements and changes in the snow leopard population.

Protecting the snow leopard habitat: We are working with local communities and key stakeholders to secure the high mountain habitat of snow leopards in a manner that benefits both people and snow leopards.

Every species saved is a win for future generations.
